 WORSHIP

Sunday, May 29, 2022, “How To Stop Dishonoring the Dead: A Memorial Day Reflection”

Please join us this Sunday for a Memorial Day service to honor those who fought to secure freedoms that we seem to be quickly losing in 2022. We will take time to mourn the continued loss of innocent lives as our militaristic, individualistic, white supremacist mindset endangers civilian lives right here in our own domestic war zone. We will come together as a beloved community not only to grieve, but to take concrete action to make a difference, as if our lives and the lives of our children depend on it. Because they do.

Oh, and one more important thing:  This Sunday, right after the Time For All Ages, we will be inviting our children to a supervised playtime in our wonderful playground.   While we value the new normal of having Family Worship most Sundays, this week it just seems right to let our precious children play together as we contemplate heavy topics inside the sanctuary.  So, please come and bring your children!  It is so very good to be together.

We will be in-person in the sanctuary, as well as online in our Zoom room or follow on our Facebook page.

 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

RE Schedule Sunday, May 29th

Nursery: Closed

PK-8: Playground and Activity Time

RE participants will be invited to leave the sanctuary immediately after Story Wisdom. We will share joys and sorrows. After joys and sorrows, participants will have the opportunity to remain in the sharing circle to talk about any thoughts, concerns, or feelings about recent events or participants can choose to engage in an arts and crafts activity or play on the playground.  We will enjoy playground and activity time until 12:00 noon.

Chalice Lighter Registration

We are seeking Chalice Lighters for this summer. NWUUC welcomes childrenā€™s participation in the weekly Sunday service. Options to participate include lighting a chalice in the sanctuary, via Zoom during the service, or by submitting a video to re@nwuuc.org that can be played during the service. An LED candle can be used instead of a flame. Please use this link to sign up: Chalice Lighter Summer Registration Link

Art As Communication: Save The Children

by Philip J. Rogers

ā€œWho really cares?  Whoā€™s willing to try?ā€ was penned by Marvin Gaye in his 1970 song, Save The Children.  And now in 2022 we ask the same questions after 213 mass shootings this year alone with the last three in the past days and months.  This song may not say it all, but it makes a serious point to be seriously considered by us all.

Thoughts and prayers are no longer enough as the nation goes back to ā€œbusiness as usualā€ while those who can stop or reduce the growing violence against both young and old alike care more about their political positions of power and wealth than their duty of service to this nation which they vowed to protect and defend.

The lyrics of ā€œSave the Children:ā€

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1KqO8YtXlY

I just want to ask the question: Who really cares?

To save a world in despair.  Who really cares?

There’ll come a time, when the world won’t be singin’

Flowers won’t grow, bells won’t be ringin’

Who really cares?  Who’s willing to try

To save a world that is destined to die?

When I look at the world; it fills me with sorrow

Little children todayā€¦ really gonna suffer tomorrow

Oh, what a shame, such a bad way to live

Who is to blame, when we can’t stop livin’?

Live, live for life; but let live everybody

Live life for the children.  Oh, for the children

You see,,, let’s save the children!

Save the babies; Save the babies

If you wanna love, youā€™ve got to save the babies!

All of the childrenā€¦!

Congregational Meeting Report

The congregational meeting held on May 22 resulted in a balanced budget being adopted and the slate of leadership nominees being accepted by the members present in-person and on zoom.  Also presented at the meeting was the recommendation to honor Sara Swint, a recently deceased friend of the congregation who left much of her estate to Northwest, by naming our nursery ā€œThe Sara Swint Nurseryā€ since she was, for many years, a volunteer working with the toddlers.

The congregation also approved the final signing of documents with the bank from which we are getting a loan to start the preschool this year.

Thus far, our skeleton crew of busy, wonderful people is:

2nd Sunday – Pam & David Zenner (set-up) and Becky Ferguson (clean-up)

3rd Sunday – Glenn Koller, Kaye McCall & Anne Bennett

The food served on Sunday mornings is provided by our volunteers and is partially reimbursed by your much appreciated basket donations!

One More Week To Own A Bob Thacker Painting!

We hope everyone who has been coming to in-person services at Northwest has had a good look at the charming paintings of Bob Thacker in

Subramanian Hall.

They are available for purchase through a bidding system, and since there

are so few of us, you can probably acquire your favorite/s for a reasonable

price. For those of you who have gotten used to attending services in your

pajamas, we will be posting most of the artwork online in the coming weeks.

We are grateful to Susie Thacker for donating the work to Northwest.
