February Book Groupies: A Mercy

Book Groupies will meet Tuesday, February 11th at 7pm in the Art Gallery to discuss A Mercy by Toni Morrison. We are very fortunate to have a Morrison scholar in our congregation, Dr. Veta Tucker, who will lead our discussion.

A Mercy, set in 1690’s Baltimore, has been described as a novel that will open your eyes to many societal and racial issues that we still face today yet is said to examine slavery through the lens of power, not race. A beautifully crafted book that should be read slowly and deliberately, it has also been described as a disturbing story of a mother and daughter’s relationship. Copies of A Mercy are available in our Bellwether Bookstore. Please consider buying your books from Bellwether as 100% of the profits go to NWUUC.

January Book Groupies: The Overstory

The NWUUC Book Groupies will be reading the 2019 Pulitzer Prize winner, The Overstory, by National Book Award Winner, Richard Powers, for our Tuesday, January 14th meeting at 7 pm in the Art Gallery. We will not be meeting in December in order to give plenty of time for reading this powerful novel which speaks to climate change and activism. I have heard that this mind opening fiction will change the way you see the world and should be mandatory reading the world over. Of course, we have the paperback in our bookstore and at a reduced price, so check it out!

October Book Groupies: Persepolis

The October book for the NWUUC Book Groupies is the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. This memoir of her childhood in Tehran gives us an intimate portrait of the overthrow of a Shah’s regime, followed by the Islamic Revolution and eventually the war with Iraq. Marjane was the great-granddaughter of  one of Iran’s last emperors but her parents were committed Marxists, which adds even more complexity to her story.

Join us in the Art Gallery Tuesday, October 8th at 7 pm , as we discuss Persepolis. This book is available in our bookstore.
