SPOON RIVER!   SPOON RIVER!   SPOON RIVER!

It’s Coming… October 16

It’s Grand!  It’s Great!  It’s Timely!

BUTYou are needed to Participate

Spoon River has been an American Classic ever since its landmark debut in 1915.  Based on characters who inhabited midwestern towns, the book is a series of dramatic monologues written in free verse about one fictional town called…. Spoon River.

#belonging!

Rooted

I clung on to the feeling

You and I were molded the same way

by our foundations and roots

nestled deep in the same place of belonging;

Quiet and withdrawn, in the shadows

we grew slow, dipping our leaves into a shy beam of sun

But only I dared to branch out,

come out of the shadows and search for the light

to stand in the glory and to expand.

We’re both standing in the sun now.

kk Jun 2018

     Will we as a congregation collectively dare to “branch out” from within to be the welcoming community we truly desire?  There are so many out there desirous of belonging somewhere that is truly inclusive and not exclusive.  Ponder this!

#encouragement!

To be there to see it, the wings of geese in the lightlessness;

the blur of Hummingbirds roaring softly on summer porches,

the earthquake of thunder on evenings when you swear dusk

will never fade out.

Be for this, keep being, for there is music in all this;

Quietly it plays, almost inaudible, but the melody remains.

Be for this, and lend yourself to the perfect cacophony.

-Tyler Knott Gregson

#thanks!

     Thank you in advance for your generosity in making our Audio Video Project a success so our sanctuary can benefit from High-Definition Projection programs from ZOOM presentations to Congregational Meeting displays and Video presentation events.  Please designate your donations as the AV Fund.  We’re almost there!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Endowment Committee

The NWUUC Endowment Committee is pleased to announce that it has opened the window for the receipt and review of grant requests from the Endowment Fund for calendar year 2023.

Northwest is grateful for the generous donations and bequeaths made to the fund in prior years that now enable us to support and promote our UU Principles through Endowment Fund grants.  As outlined in the Endowment Fund Charter, the Fund is to be used for the following purposes:

1. For scholarships or grants to members of Northwest UU Congregation for the purpose of attending UU-related leadership conferences; or such other training which enables members of this congregation to grow in faith and service to Unitarian Universalism;

2. For the wider mission of the UUA at home and overseas, including but not limited to, grants to the UUA for new church development, professional leadership, educational ministries, world mission, and capital financing; and

3. For the physical plant of Northwest UU Congregation, such as, but not limited to seed money, for capital improvements or renovations, or debt reduction.  For outreach into the community, including, but not limited to, grants to UU camps and conference centers, theological schools, social service agencies or institutions to which this congregation relates, and to special programs designed for those persons in our community who are in spiritual and or economic need. Funding requests must be submitted to the Endowment Committee Chair by October 31, 2022.  This will give the committee time to review and consider each request prior to the beginning of the distribution period in early 2023.  The total 2023 distribution amount will be determined based on the fund balance as of Dec. 31, 2022.  The Committee

anticipates approximately $17,000 for grant distributions in 2023.

Note that emergency or unusual funding requests may be submitted to the Committee for consideration throughout the year, providing that grant funds remain to be awarded.

If you are aware of a need that falls within the Endowment Fund charter, please

complete a funding request form and submit it to The Endowment Committee Chair Laura Hall at laurahallatl@gmail.com by October 31, 2022.

You may download a form from the NWUUC website.

Do you have access to a great Atlanta area property that you are willing to share with the Asheville Congregation for their annual auction? Last year NW was able to offer a trip to Asheville for our auction that we would love to be able to offer this year. The Asheville folks are looking for a comparable Atlanta-area experience close to the attractions that make our city so special. Please email Melissa Niedermeyer at melissa.niedermeyer@gmail.com if you are willing to assist the Stewardship Committee with this endeavor.

Virtual Documentary Night

Our next Special Virtual Documentary Night will be on Sunday, October 2nd at 7 pm. This event is in collaboration with Emory University’s Office of Critical Event Preparedness and ResponseThey serve as the center for Emory enterprise-wide planning and coordinated response to catastrophic events affecting Emory and the broader community. The office strives to empower our community through a variety of initiatives across preparedness, training, community outreach, education, and more to strengthen disaster resiliency.

We are meeting to talk about their new documentary, Flint’s Deadly Water. A FRONTLINE documentary, drawing from a two-year investigation, uncovers the extent of a deadly Legionnaires’ disease outbreak during the Flint water crisis — and how officials failed to stop it. We will be joined by Abby Ellis (Journalist, Director) and Kayla Ruble (Journalist, Producer) for a Q&A at the end of that night! Here is a link to where you can watch the film for free. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/documentary/flints-deadly-water/

NWUUC Book Groupies

The NWUUC Book Groupies will meet on Zoom Tuesday, October 4th at 7 pm to discuss Klara and The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, a Nobel Laureate and author of Never Let Me Go, Remains of The Day and When We Were Orphans. It is claimed this book will change your view of the world as the effects of artificial intelligence are portrayed and examined. According to NPR’s Maureen Corrigan this is “a masterpiece …one of the most affecting and profound novels Ishiguro has written …”. Copies of this book are available in our Bellwether Bookstore.

If you are interested in attending this Zoom meeting please let Penny Raney know, 770 551 8817 or raneypb@cs.com, with Book Groupies in the subject line, in order to be emailed the Zoom link or call in #.

Creative Makers ALERT!

Northwest UU Congregation will have a

Makers’ Market on Sunday, October 9

If you make original stuff, we would love you to share it with the rest of the Congregation (and, hopefully, the community of Sandy Springs!) We will provide a table and tablecloth; cashiers will handle the sales (15% goes to Northwest). Your creations could be edible!

Let Helene helenejohnson299@gmail.com or

Nancy thenancyhelene@aol.com know, so we can begin

Womenspirit 2022: October 5-9, 2022

We recognize and celebrate the four ages of Woman: the Maiden, whose curiosity and boundless energy propel her towards discovery; the Mother, whose endurance and nurturing comfort all; the Warrior, whose passion and strength protect what is vital for the greatest good; and the Crone, whose wisdom and patience bring a wise perspective to us all. Each passage teaches us and those around us.

All women are welcome at UUWomenspirit, regardless of sex assigned at birth.  Here, we believe and affirm that transgender women are women.  While we recognize that we are still learning and growing, we aim to be a welcoming and inclusive place for all women who wish to celebrate the Feminine Divine.

OUR NWUUC FAMILY (CARE CORPS)

Please keep in mind those in our congregation who are ill, hospitalized or recovering, as well as those grieving a loss. Your prayers, healing thoughts, cards and emails are welcome.
