Northwest’s minister, the Rev. Terry Davis, joined eight other Georgia Unitarian Universalist ministers in a celebration of marriage following the historical U.S. Supreme Court decision that provided “equal dignity in the eyes of the law” for all who wish to marry.
Over 250 people attended the wedding ceremony held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta (UUCA) on July 12, 2015. Seven gay and lesbian couples who, until just recently, had been denied access to marriage were officially wed.
Rev. Anthony Makar, the Senior Minister at UUCA, captured the tenor of the celebration as he spoke of the power of love and its ability to be a redemptive and transforming power in our society.
Rev. Davis read Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s remarks from the court’s majority opinion that grant equal access to marriage to all Americans, that state, in part,
“No Union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a martial union, two people become something greater than once they were.”
Afterwards, a reception was held for the newlyweds.
May it be so . . .
