 WORSHIP

Sunday, September 18, 2022, “Fitting In Not Required”

This Sunday, join us as we continue exploring our theme for the month, Belonging.   Belonging isn’t the same as “fitting in”.  Belonging means you are CELEBRATED here, whether or not you fit nicely into any box at all.  You belong here.

We will be in-person in the sanctuary, as well as online in our Zoom room or follow on our Facebook page.

 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Nursery: Open from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

RE: Please join us in the Chalice House after the service for RE classes. We will have playground and activity time from 12:00 – 12:30 p.m.

Grades PK-5

RE classes will begin for grades PK- 5 at 11:20 a.m. and will end at 12:00 noon. Parents should walk their children to the arts and crafts room located in the lower level of the Chalice House. Playground and activity time will take place from 12:00 noon – 12:30 p.m. All children should be picked up from the playground no later than 12:30 p.m.

Grades 6-12 (RE Class 11:00 – 12:00 noon)

Middle School and High School students will meet immediately after the service at the front entrance to the Chalice House. RE Teachers will meet you there and walk you into the building. This age group will be meeting in the upper level of the Chalice House.

Playground/Activity Time Volunteers

Come play with us! Volunteers are needed for playground and activity time. If you are interested in volunteering after the service, please contact the Director of Religious Education, Adia Fields-Udofia, at re@nwuuc.org

Chalice Lighter Registration

NWUUC welcomes children’s participation in the weekly Sunday service. Options to participate include lighting a chalice in the sanctuary, via Zoom during the service, or by submitting a video to re@nwuuc.org that can be played during the service. An LED candle can be used instead of a flame. Please use this link to sign up: Chalice Lighter Fall Registration Link

Trunk-or-Treat

Please join us immediately after the service on October 30th from 11:00 – 12:30 for Trunk-or-Treat and a Fall/Halloween themed potluck. What is Trunk-or-Treat? It is a fun way for all ages to celebrate Halloween. All participants are invited to dress up in their favorite costume, pop open their decorated trunks, and our children and youth will select Halloween treats from the back of your trunk. Adults who would like to participate can also collect treats and those treat bags will be donated to a local children’s shelter. Please mark your calendar and join us for this spooktacular event!

Maya Angelou on ‘Belonging’

by Ken Haller, 2017

“I belong every place. I belong no place. I belong to myself…”

-by Maya Angelou

Interview with Bill Moyers-

MAYA ANGELOU:

“You only are free when you realize you belong no place — you belong every place — no place at all.  The price is high.  The reward is great…”

BILL MOYERS: “Do you belong anywhere?”

MAYA ANGELOU: “I haven’t yet.”

BILL MOYERS: “Do you belong to anyone?”

MAYA ANGELOU:

“More and more… I belong to myself.  I’m very proud of that.  I am very concerned about how I look at Maya.  I like Maya very much.”

Ken Haller Statement:

This Christmas morning, I was listening to “1A,” the NPR public affairs show, and the guest was Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston who studies courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy.  She referenced the Maya Angelou quote above from an interview with Bill Moyers in 1973.  This concept — that we belong no place, that we belong every place, that we must belong first and foremost to ourself — really resonated with me as I spend Christmas day at home on my own.

To welcome those considered as “others” in society or, knowingly or unknowingly by us, then it is critical that we discard preconceived notions and fears and “be” the personification of love to honestly enable the accomplishment of those person’s desire of “belonging” no place, yet every place and foremost to themselves in whatever space they chance to occupy.

May it be so!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Autumnal Equinox

Sunday, September 18, 11:30am

The Wheel of the Year has come round to the Autumnal Equinox, the time of equal night and day as the warmth of Summer begins to fade and the coolness of the Fall leads us toward longer nights and shorter days as the Sun continues its trek to the Southern Hemisphere. The Hawk’s Hoop Chapter of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) will mark the event with a Mabon ritual in Stan’s Circle in the woods behind the church and on Zoom with a ritual on Sunday the 18th of September at 11:30 am. The ritual is open to all who seek a closer connection with the spirituality of Mother Earth and achieve a sense of balance in their lives.

Do you have access to a great Atlanta area property that you are willing to share with the Asheville Congregation for their annual auction? Last year NW was able to offer a trip to Asheville for our auction that we would love to be able to offer this year. The Asheville folks are looking for a comparable Atlanta-area experience close to the attractions that make our city so special. Please email Melissa Niedermeyer at melissa.niedermeyer@gmail.com if you are willing to assist the Stewardship Committee with this endeavor.

Reserve Your Space at the Retreat, October 21-23

Time to plan your trip to The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center in Highlands, NC, for our congregational retreat October 21-23.  This is a great opportunity to connect again with fellow congregants amid the breathtaking autumn colors and vistas from the top of our mountain.

Saturday morning our minister Misha Sanders will lead us in a workshop – The Art of Connection.  There will be other activities for the children.  After lunch there will be opportunities for hiking, crafts or just relaxing! There will also be time to practice your talent for our popular Saturday night talent show, followed by a campfire and yummy S’mores.

Registration is available on The Mountain website under retreats or through the Mountain calendar page. Registration deadline is October 7, but spaces go fast so don’t wait to register!

Womenspirit 2022: October 5-9, 2022

We recognize and celebrate the four ages of Woman: the Maiden, whose curiosity and boundless energy propel her towards discovery; the Mother, whose endurance and nurturing comfort all; the Warrior, whose passion and strength protect what is vital for the greatest good; and the Crone, whose wisdom and patience bring a wise perspective to us all. Each passage teaches us and those around us.

All women are welcome at UUWomenspirit, regardless of sex assigned at birth.  Here, we believe and affirm that transgender women are women.  While we recognize that we are still learning and growing, we aim to be a welcoming and inclusive place for all women who wish to celebrate the Feminine Divine.

OUR NWUUC FAMILY (CARE CORPS)

Please keep in mind those in our congregation who are ill, hospitalized or recovering, as well as those grieving a loss. Your prayers, healing thoughts, cards and emails are welcome.
