 WORSHIP

Sunday, April 17, 2022, “From Seeming Death, Alleluia!

“Lo, the day of days is here, Alleluia!

Festival of hope and cheer! Alleluia!

At the south windā€™s genial breath ā€” Alleluia!

Nature wakes from seeming death, Alleluia!”

As more and more of us are coming together in-person, it is beginning to seem like a Spring awakening “from seeming death,” isn’t it?

This Easter Sunday, come celebrate with us the ancient story of the triumph of life over death, the returning of Spring, and our own re-emergence together as a beloved community!

We will be in-person in the sanctuary, as well as online in our Zoom room or follow on our Facebook page.

Earth Day Workday Announcement

In recognition of Earth Day, Friday, April 22, Northwest will have a tree-planting workday Saturday, April 23 beginning at 9 am.  A major requirement for our soon-to-be-realized preschool is that we must plant a buffer of trees along the residential borders of our property, which will be upwards of 30 trees.  Not only will this enhance our grounds but will benefit the environment more broadly.

Once we purchase the trees they will need to be planted very soon after they arrive, so we need as many able-bodied people who can to come help in this endeavor.  Please consider joining congregation members and friends for this important work day.  Bring your work gloves, sun hats, boots and energy, and weā€™ll provide water and snacks to hydrate and energize you. There will be an auger to dig holes for the roots to be planted.  Many hands will make this work go smoothly!  Please do keep in mind that renters will be using the main building all day so we should park near the back of the lot and use the Chalice House for rest breaks.

Contact David Stewart to let him know you will be coming!  We need a head count to know how many trees we can actually get planted.

Virtual Documentary Night

The next Virtual Documentary Night in honor of Earth Month will be on Sunday, April 24th at 7 pm.  This Virtual Documentary Night is in collaboration with the Rollins Environmental Health Action Coalition (REHAC), a student-run organization at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. We will be discussing the documentary, Taking Root. This film tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights, and defend democracyā€”a movement for which this charismatic woman became an iconic inspiration. Here is a link where you can watch it for free. https://vimeo.com/223901837

As always, contact Adam Hicks for the discussion link or to be added to his email list.  communitydocumentarynight@gmail.com.

From Rev. Joan

The Case for ā€œEasteringā€

There is a story that Bruce Clary told at this time of year some years ago about his pet Siamese fighting fish that occupied a small aquarium on his desk. He called him ā€œGefilte.ā€ He wrote: ā€œFrom time to time I would sense a presence and look up to find him staring at me, and there was a feeling of connectedness between our two worlds. He was good company.ā€

One day Bruce found Gelfilte lying flat on his side in the bottom of his little desk-top world, pale and lifeless. ā€œThe day had quickly turned cold, and I suspected the sudden drop in temperature did him in. I quickly tried to revive him by wrapping his tank and shaking it gently. He stirred at the motion, began to swim, and soon his brilliant blue color began to return. We had done an eastering.

The poet Gerald Manley Hopkins reminds us that easter makes more good sense as a verb rather than a noun. He invokes the spirit of Christ when he writes, ā€œLet him easter in us, be a dayspring to the dimness of us.ā€

We live in difficult, even disturbing times. And there are a lot of times when we are tempted to sit by the empty tomb, wondering and waiting for miracles. I find the notion that the word easter works best as a verb can be helpful here.

Please keep in mind those in our congregation who are ill, hospitalized or recovering, as well as those grieving a loss. Your prayers, healing thoughts, cards and emails are welcome.

A major Joy on our campus is this nest of bluebird eggs, a reminder of the wonder and beauty of new life.
