 WORSHIP

This Sunday, September 5 on Zoom
“Builders of the Dream: A Labor Day Celebration”

Please join us via Zoom as we celebrate laborers in this time when the important (essential!) work of our hands is more front-and-center than ever. Our small worship team will be Zooming to YOUR home from our sanctuary.  Please join us from the safety of your screens at home in your comfiest Sunday clothes.

NEXT Sunday (not THIS Sunday, but September 12th) Update!
NEXT Sunday, the majority of us will still gather via Zoom.  However, our children, youth, and their drivers are encouraged to join the worship team OUTSIDE at Northwest for a youth-centered worship about how we move and change and create new things when the old things get broken.

The login for Zoom is https://nwuuc.org/zoom/ or follow the service on our Facebook page. Stay tuned in afterwards for our Coffee Hour at 11 am.

OUR NWUUC FAMILY (CARE CORPS)

From Rev. Joan

Please keep in mind those in our congregation who are ill, hospitalized or recovering, as well as those grieving a loss. Your prayers, healing thoughts, cards and emails are welcome.

Tina Graf, former member of Northwest who now lives in Oberlin,
Ohio, contacted us recently about the passing of her former partner,
Robert Pytel. Robert, who had been living in Florida and was ill in
recent years, died on July 11 just short of his 78th birthday Our
hearts go out to those who grieve his loss.

A call to Mani Subramanian, Northwest member who has
relocated to Austin, TX, found him feeling much better since a
diagnosis of Lyme Disease was confirmed. The antibiotic
regimen is doing its job. So happy to hear this, Mani and Ruth.

Please continue to send Marilyn Matlock healing thoughts as
she is slowly recovering from West Nile virus. Cards of
encouragement are welcomed.

 ANNOUNCEMENTS

***Covid Update***

Dear NWUUC,

Our UUA President, Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray, has made this video for us.  Please take a look and listen:
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSqmSeyhQ-Y

Several of our congregational leaders, our staff, and I are in close communication about our collective and individual safety as it relates to the COVID-19 upsurge, especially the Delta variants.

We will make no decisions lightly. However, it is apparent that we cannot keep our unvaccinated children safe if we reconvene in the way we had hoped to. There will be delays and changes in the re-opening plans.  We will notify you of any changes in the plan via email blast, and in upcoming Sunday Zoom worships.

I know that we are all so eager to be together. And I am thankful to serve a congregation of people who understand these truths:

1. Science is real, and we are always better off for paying close attention to the experts.

2. Y’all means ALL y’all, and we must consider the safety of our children and our immunocompromised beloveds.

3. This is hard, and we can do hard things together. We have proven that already.

Stay tuned!

With an abundance of caution and deep LOVE,
Rev. Misha

The NWUUC Fall Auction is (Still) Coming!

Northwest will be holding its annual auction online again this year and we need everyone’s help.  If you are an artist, a crafter, a maker, a cook, or just have neat items stashed in your attic that need a good home….We need your stuff!!

Last year, we had an awesome inaugural online auction where 75 items were bid upon, and we made a $5,000 profit.

Let’s break some records this year!  The stewardship committee would love to expand the auction offerings this year to 100 items and try to double our profits.

We can do it!  Online bidding is easy, fun, and a great way to support our church endeavors through these challenging times.

Don’t know what to donate?  How about these ideas?

  • Home-cooked dinners and desserts in your home, or for delivery; your choice

  • Air B and B Weekend or Vacation Home Getaway

  • Artwork or home decor; Homemade crafts; Holiday decorations

  • Themed baskets (art/craft supplies, kids’ toys, books, etc.)

  • Gift cards or certificates (support your local restaurants and introduce us to a new place!)

  • Create an event to hold in our newly renovated building! (Groups of less than 20.)

    • Meals and Movie or Game Night

    • Lessons (yoga, cooking, life coaching, mini concert)

    • Wine and Cheese Tasting

Please complete this Google Form to post your donation today!

Virtual Documentary Night

The next Virtual Documentary Night will be on SUNDAY, September 12th at 7 pm.  We will be discussing the documentary, The Wisdom of Trauma.  The film follows physician, bestselling author and Order of Canada recipient Dr. Gabor Maté and explores the hidden wisdom of our deepest pain and the interconnected epidemics of anxiety, addiction, and chronic illness plaguing Western society. Here is a link to where you can watch it for free https://documentarymania.com/player.php?title=The+Wisdom+of+Trauma.

To join via zoom please email Adam Hicks at communitydocumentarynight@gmail.com for the link to the presentation.

NWUUC Book Groupies

The NWUUC Book Groupies will meet again Tuesday, Sept.14th at 7 pm on Zoom to discuss Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Leadership In Turbulent Times as several of our regular members were unable to be at the August meeting. This book is a fascinating study of four former American Presidents – Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson – and the tragedies and circumstances of their lives that propelled them to their presidencies. You will experience a great learning experience in many ways when you read this book!

If you would like a copy of this book from our Bellwether Bookstore, please
leave Penny Raney a message at 770 551 8817 and we will get a copy to you. Also let Penny know if you want to join the Zoom meeting so you can receive the link.

This year NWUUC is not having our usual congregational retreat to The Mountain, our UU retreat and conference center outside Highlands, NC. However, there are lots of opportunities at The Mountain. The Southeast UU Fall Institute, SUUFI, is coming up soon. There are a few spaces left so hurry and register for SUUFI or check out the other events!
