In the Spirit meditative service will return on Tuesday, January 7, at 7:30 pm in the sanctuary. Join us for a quiet evening after the holidays as we have music, readings, candles and meditation to start the new year.
Northwest Book Groupies January 14, 7 pm
The NWUUC Book Groupies will be reading the 2019 Pulitzer Prize winner The Overstory by National Book Award Winner Richard Powers for our Tuesday, January 14th meeting at 7 pm in the Art Gallery. I have heard that this mind opening fiction will change the way you see the world and should be mandatory reading the world over. Of course, we have the paperback in our bookstore and at a reduced price, so check it out!
January Donate the Plate
West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (“WAWA”)
We select WAWA as our Donate the Plate Recipient this year and every year because its mission and work so closely aligns with our UU Principles on many levels.
WAWA’s work of protecting, preserving and restoring Atlanta’s natural resources constitutes real “environmental justice” – at the intersection where environmental problems create social injustice.
WAWA Director of Education Darryl Haddock will offer a Second Hour program on Sunday, Jan. 12th at 11:30 to discuss WAWA’s work and the challenges they seek to address, as well as opportunities for Northwest members and friends to engage.
The programs provided by WAWA include:
Signature programs to connect “youth of all ages” to nature through meaningful environmental education;
Outdoor recreation;
Hands-on environmental stewardship;
Service learning experiences at the Atlanta Children’s Forest Network ;
Growth of O-Academy, WAWA’s out-of-school time nature camp program for youth ages 6-
Collaborative efforts with community residents, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and watershed stakeholders to launch the Proctor Creek Trash Free Waters Initiative;
Establishing a network of trash traps in the Proctor Creek Watershed, inclusive of a workforce development training program and youth education initiative.
In 2019 WAWA was named as one of Atlanta Magazine’s 2019 Groundbreaker Award Winners as an Environmental Champion for Clean Water, and its Chairperson, Na’Taki Osborne Jelks, was featured in a New York Times article as a leader in the climate movement.
The challenges facing West Atlanta communities call for many approaches, many voices, and many hands available for service. WAWA works to foster effective approaches, elevate voices that have been marginalized, and leverage sweat equity to make positive, transformative impact on the Proctor, Utoy, and Sandy Creek Watersheds and the communities therein.
Annual Homeless Veterans Clothing Drive
Collection of clothing for homeless veterans will continue through January. All kinds of men’s clothing are acceptable as long as they are clean and in good condition. Shoes, socks, hats, gloves and scarves are also in demand. There will be the usual big box clearly marked in the lobby near the sanctuary doors for items to be left. Sleeping bags and rain gear are also appreciated. Please put everything in tied plastic bags.
The distribution will probably be at numerous places including the Veterans Empowerment Organization building which provides tremendous help to veterans, The Gateway Center and on the streets downtown, usually under the bridges.
We have had very successful drives for the five past years, thanks to our generous members, and we hope to keep the momentum going! For any questions, please contact Michael or Renee Burke at reneeandmike@mindspring.com.
