Farewell to Ruth and Mani Subramanian

On Sunday June 2, 2019 Northwest formally said farewell to longtime members Ruth and Mani Subramanian.  Ever since the Subramanians joined Northwest in 1988, they have generously offered their time, treasure and considerable talents to the congregation.  Ruth offered warm welcomes to newcomers as the leader of the congregation’s Community Ministry as well as filling the sanctuary with song as a member of the choir. Mani served in a number of leadership positions on the Northwest board of trustees and on the board of The Mountain, a UU retreat center in Highlands, NC.

Whenever Northwest faced fiscal changes, the Subramanians were ready with ideas, energy, leadership and vision, but also with their checkbook in hand. Seek the roots of Northwest’s Legacy Society and Northwest’s Endowment Fund and you will find the Subramanians. The Subramanian’s generosity and Mani’s individual leadership were prime factors in the success of the recent 2017 – 2020 Capital Campaign to expand our sanctuary and fellowship space.

Look behind the curtain of our monthly coffee house, the Hungry Ear, and you will find Ruth actively engaged in keeping this long running Atlanta-area tradition going. Look for the individual seeking consensus for Northwest’s social justice initiative called ARAOMC (Anti-Racism, Anti-Oppression, Multiculturalism) and you will find Mani.

ReUUion Picnic

The list of committees and involvement in events goes on from the annual area UU summer picnic called ReUUion, to Northwest Senior Network, to a women’s and family retreats at The Mountain, to stewardship drives, support for Dining for Women and other social justice events . . . you would always find a Subramanian involved.

For their long and unwavering support for Northwest and for the love and friendship shared by the Subramanians, the Northwest board of trustees declared that our soon-to-be constructed new fellowship will be called Subramanian Hall.

We all wish Ruth and Mani safe travels to their new home in Texas, being assured they will soon be welcomed and loved by a new UU Community.

Official Declaration from Northwest

Presented by Board President, Hannah Cowart.

Good morning!

Today such a special day! We are not only meeting Rev. Misha, we are also publicly honoring the contributions, presence and legacy of Ruth and Mani Subramanian. I, personally, do not know of a family that has had such an impact on our community as Ruth and Mani. They have been involved in just about every aspect of Congregational Life from serving as Board President, MTLs, spearheading fundraising efforts and have done it ALL while steadfastly upholding, not just our UU values, but also our shared covenant: the loving commitments we have made to each other.

Earlier Ruth & Mani lit our chalice, the symbol of our UU faith, to the beautiful poem entitled “We build on foundations we did not lay” recited by our own soon to be President-elect Lil Woolf.

To further signify and solidify this momentous occasion, I’d like to invite our 2018-2019 Board of Trustees forward to join me up front for a special announcement and presentation.

The poem stated: … we profit from persons we did not know, we are ever bound in community…may it always be so.

We believe that generations to come will profit from Mani and Ruth’s contributions to NW; their contributions have solidly bound our community. And we want to ensure that this is ALWAYS so. So, in eager anticipation of the expansion of our lobby and recognizing that such a space, and our community, has been made possible and forever impacted largely by Mani and Ruth, your 2018-2019 Board of Trustees hereby dedicates Subramanian Hall to our devoted members Mani and Ruth Subramanian.

We will display this plaque so proudly in our shared space and also have a more compact version for Mani and Ruth to take with them to TX, so we’ll always be close to their hearts.
