Northwest hosted the quarterly meeting of the North Georgia UU Social Justice Cluster meeting. The Social Justice Cluster has been meeting for nearly two years at different congregations. The cluster meetings offer an opportunity for members of different congregations to engage in cross-congregational activities, share information and build personal relationships.
During check-in when congregations review their social justice actions since the last meeting, Northwest shared social justice projects such as:
- Bridge Building with the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance
- Dining for Women’s 4th Annual north Georgia Dinner
- Acting for Environmental Justice
- Participation in Atlanta’s People Climate March
- Change to our once a month Donate the Plate program to a month long Share the Plate with our designed charity
This meeting included updates on legislative actions that impact the state school system, immigration and Black Lives Matter. There was also a videoconference with Katia Hansen, President and CEO of the Unitarian Universalist Refugee and Immigration Services and Education (www.uurise.org) who provided an overview on how a church could become a “sanctuary church.”
The next Cluster meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 7 from 10:00 to 1:00pm at Georgia Mountains UU Congregation (439 S. Park Dahlonega).
