October 17 — Northwest UUC Social Justice Supports Habitat for Humanity Build

On Saturday 10/17, ten Northwest members participated with 30 members of three other faith communities in the first day of a home construction project on Palm Drive in East Point, organized by Habitat for Humanity.  This home will be purchased by the Colvard family and will bring improved economic security to them and to their new community.  Habitat for Humanity has built more than 1200 homes in Atlanta to help families jump-start a new life.

Habitat relies on volunteer labor for a large part of the construction of the homes they build.  A typical home construction project lasts about seven weeks and involves approximately 2000 hours of volunteer labor.

This project is the first of its kind to be sponsored in recent years by Northwest.  Our engagement with Habitat for Humanity began last summer when they were recipients of Northwest’s Donate the Plate.

“What a great experience!” said Dave Zenner, “I had a wonderful time working with the other volunteers and it was particularly gratifying to get to know the new homeowners and see the pride they took in helping build a new home and a new life.”

There are still opportunities for Northwest members and others to participate in two additional construction days, 10/31 and 12/5.  Contact Marcia Kreycik (404 414 5070) for additional information.
