Northwest Members Attend Social Justice Meeting

Northwest members joined other Unitarian Universalists on April 25, 2015 at the quarterly meeting of the North Georgia Social Justice Cluster. The meeting, which rotates meeting locations among participating congregations, met at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens.

 

The agenda included such topics as:

  • Actions taken / planned legislatives issues
  • Awareness of a pending ballot initiative aimed at privatizing Georgia public schools
  • Update on the “no guns policy” now adopted by UUMAN, Georgia Mountains and Northwest.
  • Racial Justice
  • Immigration Justice
  • Marriage Equality
  • Climate Change
  • Discussion on approaches for Donate the Plate
  • Review of actions to help communicate our Social Justice actions in the wider community
  • Better use of the North Georgia Social Justice Facebook page

Actions taken included follow up efforts to organize a formal Unitarian Universalist letter writing campaign for the next Georgia legislative session and a call to post stories and videos of congregational social justice actions on church websites and Facebook pages as well as personal social media applications.

The next meeting is Saturday, July 25 from 10:00 to 1:00pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Gwinnett.

A short video was also shared of Unitarian Universalist participation in the recent 50th anniversary of the march in Selma.
