Moral Monday: Standing on the Side of Love with our North Georgia Churches

Moral Monday WorkshopUnitarian Universalist’s Second Principle: “Justice, Equity and Compassion in Human Relations.” Sometimes we act bravely because our faith charges us with the responsibility to live compassionately in all our relationships as well as holding our elected officials responsible to be just.

Monday,January 12, the UUs of North Georgia joined with the Moral Monday Georgia Group at the opening of the 2015 Georgia legislative session at the state capital, led by Georgia NAACP President Rev. Francys Johnson and other clergy. We staged a brief “die-in” outside the chambers where Nathen Deal was being sworn in for his second term as Governor of Georgia. We remained on the floor while clergy gave two-minute eulogies stating three issues of consideration during the next legislative session.

What did we accomplish by doing this? What do protestors ever accomplish? They bear witness to injustice and often times bring media attention to issues, helping to gain public awareness. Sometimes we think, “I’m only one person; what can I do?” When we join forces we can move mountains and UU’s have a long history of social justice actions. Our UU history points the way for the actions we must continue to take today.
