MUSIC MINISTRY

Music: The Ultimate Comfort Food
by Philip J. Rogers, D.M.A.

As election day approaches and Covid-19 continues to control our lives,
it seems imperative, due to our occasional apprehensions for the present and
the future, that we schedule time for personal care. Concerns over the need
for social, racial and cultural justice and maintaining healthcare policies for all
citizens tend to overwhelm us. As an alternative to feeding any frustration or
subtle fear with caloric delights, why not choose a nourishing meditative
snack of emotion soothing music to assuage any anxiety we may have.

From Easy Listening to Bluegrass, Country, Classical, Jazz, Gospel,
RB, to Blues or New Age we deserve a healthy dose of comforting music
that “washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” [attributed to Ludwig von
Beethoven].

For your consideration we have attached several musical delights as
possibilities for providing some sort of diversionary comfort. Enjoy!!

OUR NWUUC FAMILY (CARE CORPS)

Would you like to schedule a private meeting with Rev. Misha? Please call the main number,
770-955-1408, to set up a time.

The Care Corps continues to make phone calls in an attempt to touch base with all members as we are still practicing social distancing. If you haven’t heard from us yet, rest assured your time is coming. However, we are placing calls based on birthdays and joining anniversary dates.  If you have never put your birthday into the Realm system, we’ll never know when to wish you a happy birthday!  Now is the time to learn how to use Realm and to be able make your own calls to friends you have been missing on Sundays.  If you need help with accessing Realm, please send an email to the Tech Team at techhelp@nwuuc.org and one of our friendly tech gurus will call to help you. Remember, if you have something you want to share with us or with the congregation at large, feel free to email or call one of us—we are happy to hear from you. If you don’t want your joy or sorrow made public that is ok, too. You can trust our confidentiality.

Sorrow
The larger Unitarian Universalist community is mourning today the loss of Elandria Williams.  This announcement is from her home congregation. “It is with great sadness that the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church announces the untimely and unexpected death of our favorite daughter, Elandria Williams, a child of our church who became a dynamic denominational leader, most recently as co-moderator of the Unitarian Universalist Association”.  Elandria was co-moderator with Rev. Mr. Barb Greve (formerly of UUCA) during a transition time for the UUA from 2017-2020.   She was well known in the denomination and was loved by all.  She leaves behind parents Erven and Elnora Williams and brother Frederick.

From Rev. Joan
Like most of you, virtual worship services were a new experience for me prior to just a few months ago. When asked to do the Joys and Sorrows portion of the service I struggled to see how the ritual of the water and the stones could be effectively replicated for viewing on a screen. Actually, I think it’s proven pretty effective as we recite the same words and drop the stones in the bowl week after week.

But then, what about the interactive nature of sharing in community and what about the spontaneity? Well, we then discovered how we could use the CHAT, “that little box at the bottom of your screen.” And week after week more of you do just that. I love scrolling through the messages in the CHAT following the call for Joys and Sorrows. I love reading about what’s going on in your life, the milestones and sacred moments as well as the offers of help and the expressions of gratitude.

If you have a joy or sorrow you would like to have shared in the UNIverse please call or email Rev. Joan Davis at 404-275-0236 or joanarmstrongdavis@gmail.com.

 ANNOUNCEMENTS

Coffee Hour

Do you enjoy coffee hour each Sunday?  Are you willing to be a host from time to time?  From the beginning of our virtual Sundays we have been fortunate enough to have Liz Martin as our coffee hour host,  (thank you, Liz!) but now that she is back into intense seminary studies she isn’t able to be the host each week.
It’s pretty easy if you have any tech skills at all, so don’t be shy!  Send your name to our IT Helpdesk at techhelp@nwuuc.org and one of us will get back to you with how-to instructions.

Patio Pavers

Members and Friends,

We are so close to having our building and the new back patio completed, but we need help from several of you.  The BESC, Building Expansion Steering Committee, previous and current members, have worked so hard to bring us the beautiful expanded space that we hope we can begin to use by the end of spring.  Many of them are responsible for generous gifts to the Capital Campaign as well as making super generous loans to fill the final gap in funds.  Some of you responded to my plea two weeks ago to step forward and give one more time to bring in the final dollars needed and I thank you for that.

However, this is the help we now need, and we need it this coming Saturday, September 26.

A small but mighty group of members, several of whom are on the BESC, have spent many hours over 3 days preparing the patio area so the concrete pavers can be installed.  Because of supply issues we had to order heavier pavers than we had anticipated using.  This required more work to prepare the area, which has been done over these 3 days by John Hagler, Morning Washburn, Constance Dierickx, Michael Dierickx, Pam Zenner, Dave Zenner, Larry Wallis, Glenn Koller and David Stewart.

I suspect some if not all of these dedicated warriors will be helping on Saturday, but several more members and/or friends need to be willing to donate at least a few hours to help us move pavers, position pavers, ensure they are level, and tamp them down.  So far we do have a few other people who have said they will help, but we need YOU!  Please think about donating 2-3 hours so you can be able to say you not only gave money for the expansion but you helped lay the pavers in the patio.

The pavers are various sizes and they are admittedly a bit heavy, with the average weight being 15 pounds, so the work requires some strength, agility, and most definitely patience enough to be meticulous. It is vital that the pavers be level. No “filling in” between pavers will be done until the entire surface is ready. The team laid one complete pattern on Sunday, with gravel fill, and learned how much patience is needed. We expect this work to take several days to complete. Not everyone can do this work for long periods of time, but we will provide lunch, snacks and water for our workers. We ask that you come with sturdy gloves and if possible, knee pads.  Chairs will be set up in Subramanian Hall for you to take breaks as needed.

If you can help *at all*, please contact Constance Dierickx at csuitedoc@gmail.com or me at president@nwuuc.org and we will gladly add you to our list.  Please remember, we will ALL enjoy this wonderful space when it is finished and when it is safe to meet there again.  It is looking so good!  I am excited to think about the day we can return to it.

Thank you,
Lil Woolf

Send us your pictures!!

It was great to see recent photos of many of us in our homes and elsewhere.  It was so well received that we’d like to continue it for a while longer, so we ask that you upload your photographs of what you have been doing this summer, whether they are pictures of you coping during quarantine, or taking a vacation away or both.  Please send pictures that include you, your families, friends and your pets in them so that we may share our collective joy.

We want to include as many people as we can.  Please continue to upload your photographs to this Google drive link, https://forms.gle/9HmcXuR3RkEMU2fN9. If you are not able to access the drive, you may email pictures to this email address, webmaster@nwuuc.org.

Zoom Documentary Discussion
A Class Divided
7pm on Friday, October 9th

Watch the documentary A Class Divided on your own and then join a virtual discussion on Zoom!

The film profiles the Iowa schoolteacher Jane Elliott and her class of third graders, who took part in a class exercise about discrimination and prejudice in 1970 and reunited as adults to recall the experience.

Here is a link to where you can watch it for free. https://youtu.be/1mcCLm_LwpE
This event is open to all who are open to all and is not restricted to Atlanta or the United States. Feel free to invite anyone you think may be interested in joining our discussion. Please allow others to get their full thought out and that any disagreement is voiced in a civil way. At the end we will decide together the topic for the next month’s film.

Please email Adam Hicks bryantadamhicks@gmail.com to be added to the email list. That way you will be able to receive updates on future events as well as the zoom link and password, which will be sent out the morning of the discussion.

NWUUC Book Groupies

The NWUUC Book Groupies will not be meeting in September but we will resume our monthly meetings, now on Zoom, at 7 pm on Tuesday, October 13th, to discuss White Fragility, the NY Times best seller by Robin DiAngelo and published by our UU Beacon Press. “DiAngelo explores how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.” This is a short book so, for extra “credit” or if you have already read it, we are recommending Between The World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, a memoir developed through a series of letters from the author to his son. This is an exceptional book written in Coates’s usual insightful style.

Beverly Cree Appointed as Acting Executive Director

Fellow Mountain Supporters, I am delighted to announce that your Board of Trustees has appointed Beverly Cree as Acting Executive Director of The Mountain effective October 16. Beverly has a long history of leadership at The Mountain, having served for six years each on the Board of Trustees and the Mountain Endowment Board (including serving as President of the Endowment Board) alongside her many years of service as a volunteer and participant in many Mountain programs over more than 30 years. Before retiring, Beverly spent her career researching and teaching childhood development and psychology. Among other degrees, she holds a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies. Beverly has begun working alongside Ted, enabling us to have an orderly transition in the work of The Mountain. Additionally, the Board has started the search process for permanent leadership, with more information to come as available.  Please join me in welcoming and supporting Beverly in her new role. With gratitude for your involvement in The Mountain,

KC Boyce Chair, Board of Trustees

Greetings to All Who Know and Care About The Mountain, Although the request to serve The Mountain in this time of transition was not expected as part of my life journey, I am embracing this opportunity.  It is a time of looking forward to working with others affiliated with The Mountain, the staff, the Mountain and Endowment Boards, and the many new people who will be connecting with The Mountain in the future.  Together we will create the next chapter for our beloved Mountain.

With appreciation and anticipation, Beverly
