UU North Georgia Social Justice Cluster Meeting (Aug 2014)Unitarian Universalists from Georgia’s northern congregations meet in Dahlonega on August 16, 2014 for their quarterly meeting. The following congregations sent representatives: UU Metro North, UUC Gwinnett, UUF Athens, Emerson, UUC Atlanta and Georgia Mountains.

Social justice topics discussed included:

  • Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) Guest at Your Table program. The UUSC sponsored program is in its 40th year collecting money during the holiday season to support global human rights projects.
  • Moral Mondays. Moral Mondays protests are held when the Georgia legislation is in session. Attention was placed on Jobs With Justice. Moral Mondays is also expanding its footprint by coordinating actions with Cobb County NAACP.
  • Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Empowerment Workshop. This workshop sponsored by the UUA, assists congregation in the development of effective social justice programs.
  • The New Georgia Gun Law. There was conversation on the collective response of North Georgia congregations on their response to the Georgia HB 60, sometimes called the “Guns Everyway Law.”   Also discussed was a coalition of faith groups dedicated to getting guns off campuses, www.MomsDemandAction.org
  • Immigration Reform. Over 100 people “Standing on the Side of Love” were recently arrested in Washington, DC demand family-oriented action on our nation’s immigration policies. Local action was also discussed.
  • Healing Our Hearts as Wounded Knee. The 125th anniversary of this event will be held next year. A 10 day horse ride is scheduled for December designed to help understand how the past is connected to our present times.
  • Lawrence Lessig’s Rootstrikers and May Day Update. The rootstrike movement is designed to take money out of politics. The May Day focus in 2016 will focus on identifying politicians running for office with platforms sympathetic to the removal of the money from our election process
