Unitarian Universalists (UU) from congregations across North Georgia gathered for their Georgia ReUUnion picnic on September 7 at Pickneyville Park in Norcross. Begun in 2002, this annual gathering is a venue for fellowship, a potluck meal and a meeting place to coordinate social justice activities across congregations.
Many of the 165 UUs attending wore their “Standing on the Side of Love” t-shirts. The t-shirts represent a national interfaith advocacy campaign formed in response to a shooting death during services at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville in 2008. Rev. Terry Davis, minister at the Northwest UU Congregation in Sandy Springs remarked, “We are religion of deeds, not creeds.” Social justice activities discussed included Moral Monday events held during the active session of the Georgia legislature to bring focus on issues such as healthcare, wages, and discrimination in the workplace. Preparations were also coordinated for the Atlanta Pride parade in October and the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the civil rights “Bloody Sunday” event in Selma, AL which will be held in March 2015. Other upcoming national and local social justice events were also discussed.
The picnic provided great food, music, singing, games, arts and crafts, plenty of hugs and fine conversation.
