Northwest Earth Leaders Join GIPL for Dr. Tucker Lecture
At a lecture and luncheon sponsored by Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL), Northwest members Tom and Linda Couch and Dave Zenner joined 75 of our climate partners from GIPL and other secular and faith communities to hear an inspiring message about environment and social justice from Dr Mary Evelyn Tucker, Yale environmental and religious scholar. Dr. Tucker’s message addressed how religious institutions can join together to work to eliminate poverty and offset the effects of global climate change. She took as her inspiration Pope Francis’s May 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si.
Dr. Tucker says, “Environmental scholars and activists have been, until fairly recently, concentrating on environmental issues of land, conservation, biodiversity, and so on… Poverty has been kept separate. Laudato Si invites us to make the connections that exist between global poverty and the environmental challenges that we face on this planet.“
Linda, Tom, and Dave will bring this message back to Northwest on Sunday, October 30, during the Second Hour session on the proposed “half earth” project.
