High Resolve

Please join us at the service tonight–Tuesday, November 25, 2014– at 7 PM in our sanctuary.

Dear Friends,

The words of Christian mystic Howard Thurman called to me this morning as I saw the photos on the Internet of the protests, the violence, the frustration and tears in Ferguson and elsewhere:

Keep fresh before me the moments of my High Resolve,
that in good times or in tempests,
I may not forget that to which my life is committed.
Keep fresh before me the moments of my high resolve.

The strife and grief in Missouri are the strife and grief of a nation that still suffers from the open wounds of racism and racial inequality. We cannot forget that, as people of a liberal faith, we are first and foremost people who are called to remain committed to our highest ideals–including compassion, justice, and peace.

But perhaps, most especially, we must have high resolve. Even as we once again feel helpless and even a little hopeless in the aftermath of another young black man’s death and another time of intense racial tension, we must keep moving forward. We must keep at the task of joining together to dismantle fear and oppression and build bridges of trust. And, we must be persistently peaceful.

At 7:00 PM tonight at Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Sandy Springs, there will be a “Prayers for Peace” candlelight vigil. We will pray for healing and peace for the people of Ferguson and for us all.

Please join me and let’s unite our hearts with the hope that we will build the Beloved Community soon.

Warmly,

Terry
