Northwest Gives Comment to Public Service Commission

Public Service Commission Members

Dave Zenner, head of the Earth Ministry Team at the Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation (Northwest), and congregational president Keith Kreycik gave comments today before Georgia’s Public Services Commission (PSC). Both Northwest members spoke in opposition to a proposal by Georgia Power to charge a fee to solar power producers for use of the electrical grid.

Zenner provided background on Northwest’s solar project. “We installed a 4 kilowatt photovoltaic array on our sanctuary roof in 2008 because we feel strongly that we have an obligation to be the best stewards of earth.” That solar array is connected to the electrical grid providing power for general consumption and is subject to the fees proposed by Georgia Power. Zenner explained, “As a faith community, we believe we have a responsibility to preserve and maintain our environment.”

Kreycik spoke about the economics of solar power generation. He stated, “A rapidly growing solar co-generation industry and the associated businesses will result in more jobs for Georgia. Our best hope for maintaining an influential economic force in a competitive world is to foster, not discourage, investment and innovation amongst supplies of energy.”

The PSC voted against Georgia Power’s request to charge a fee for use of the electrical grid to solar power generators.

Northwest is a liberal religious community, grounded on the principles of Unitarian Universalism. We seek to create loving community, inspire joy and spiritual growth, and support courageous action.
